The Icarus First Person View Drone Racing Headset

IMG_7915-1 EDIT SMALL

The Icarus first person drone racing kit is my final major project I am working on for university.  It is a ready-to-race kit that enables users to experience first person view drone racing in a safe and affordable way.

The above image has all of the internal components for the Icaras first person view drone racing headset laid out prior to assembly.  I designed all of the parts in SolidWorks and 3D printed them out using an Ultimaker 2 in black PLA.

The externally visible parts have been sanded, filled and sprayed to fit the colour scheme of the finished product.

The above image shows the internal structure in its assembled form.  The blue wheel rotates to tighten the internal smartphone locking mechanism.  To release the lock, simply press down on the top button and rotate in the opposite direction.

This is a shot of my HTC phone in position streaming a stereoscopic video of a FPV drone race.  The phone is comfortably locked into position and the focal distance is correct.  Time for some fast paced, FPV drone racing action!

Phone Locking Mechanism For FPV Racing Goggles

2015-05-12 10.18.23-1

This is the phone locking mechanism I’ve designed for my First Person View (FPV) racing goggle university project.  On the left is the initial test piece and on the right the final test piece.  A clockwise twist will lock the phone into position and when you want to release it, press the button and rotate it anti-clockwise.  Simples!  To use that is, designing it all to fit into a headset and accommodate several phone sizes… not so simples.

Work In Progress

2015-05-01 21.43.41-1

Just a quick status update and a picture of some concept sketches for my final uni project I’m working on.

I’ve been very busy lately with university coming to an end soon so I apologise for the lack of posts.  I will update the blog again soon as the project develops further, I’ll also be adding more cool stuff, inspirational nuggets and music bits.  Thanks for your patience!
